I have stability problems perhaps because the 060 doesn't have a fan but only a heatsink. If I put the 512 MB Fat16 formatted CF into the CF-ide adapter the system doesn't boot...maybe it should be formatted in a format more compatible with Atari?
Finally, after Raven has been running for a while I have video disturbances as if from radio interference...

It should be just a normal MS-DOS FAT16 partition, nothing Atari specific needed.

I used Linux gparted to set up the different partitions on my current card.
I've also had good result with "diskpart" on Windows following a guide like this:
https://vmspot.com/format-fat16-usb/

But even if the partition was not recognised I would have thought it should boot to emuTOS anyway.
I have two FAT16 partitions which are available in EmuTOS, both are 255mb.
And then also one pretty large FAT32 partition plus an even larger EXT2FS which EmuTOS cannot understand but MiNT can.

With the card attached, do you get any output in the log at all running the debug rom?
Perhaps double check that pin1 of the adapter lines up with pin1 on the motherboard and they're not getting flipped the wrong way around or something. That could for sure make it not boot at all (I know from experience :) )
If you have master/slave/cable-select jumpers on the adapter then perhaps try those too.

It should be said that I have only tried with the two CF cards I have so the possibility for compatibility issues with other brands/models cannot be completely dismissed too.

Still. Very cool to see the progress of it now getting to the desktop!

The data line used for talking to the MFP is shared with 8 bits of the dataline of the IDE interface.
You're crashing on a gibberish interrupt number returned by the MFP so IDE is most likely interfering on the bus when it shouldn't.
Screenshot 2024-11-14 at 02.12.59.png
My best guesses would be:

- U402 (Iksi) handles the control signals for the IDE port so it could be something to look at. Perhaps it's signalling IDE-enable all the time even when it's not supposed to be addressed.
These are all through-hole components so risk of soldering mistakes are quite limited though. Programming error perhaps?
I guess you might gain some info by testing if you crash the same if you have adapter connected but no CF card in adapter. I'm not sure that would make anything conclusive but interesting none the less.

- Perhaps the adapter is just bogus. Not unheard of if it's an ebay one.

- Or, something with the the port <-> cable <-> adapter setup is not correct for some reason so pin1 on motherboard is not pin1 on device then that would probably guarantee exactly this to happen.

This is the adapter I bought. I could have damaged it because I also inserted it in the wrong direction. The error gives me both with CF and without CF inserted.
Today I will do other tests...

I'm doing some tests and with the adapter inserted without CF it boots correctly, while with the CF inserted (I tried three different ones) it freezes at the beginning and doesn't even give a debug line.

I don't know where pin1 is on the adapter, but if it's one of the red ones then the adapter at least has the correct pinout for the connector type (female).
If the adapter would have had a male connector then the correct pin1 location should instead be one of the blue ones.

Normally, motherboard and device both have male pins with exactly the same pinout.
That fact makes them impossible to directly connect, even if you physically change the connector on one -- pin1 of motherboard would go to pin2 on device if you did. The IDC cable between is what makes it work.

If you have a device with a female connector, and it's designed to plug directly into a motherboard, then it should have cable-pinout rather than device-pinout. Disk-on-modules do exactly this, and I assume most/all(?) adapters would too.
But it's all too easy to imagine these almost-free ones possibly reusing exactly the same everything as the more usual male variants, then just swap the connector and call it a day.

I'e encountered one of those before so maybe I'm just jaded and untrusting, and possibly had bad luck :)
Out of curiosity I grabbed one from my box-of-stuff just now and it has the correct cable-pinout, it even had a key'ed connector with pin20 blocked which was surprisingly professional (though not great for me since the male header I use on Raven has all pins even the key one... I should probably find a different part number)

I apologise this felt a bit long and overexplaining. My point was mostly that I personally wouldn't drop that female adapter from the suspect list until I had verified that it is indeed using the pinout you'd expect for your intended purpose.

If it turns out all fine and correct then I would maybe looks at Iksi related stuff since it's part of controlling some of the IDE signals.

Ok, a damaged pin in the cf-ide adapter could be the cause of the problem. I'll try another one and see...
