MIDI - complete noob questions

Just FYI guys, people have re-created Cubase dongles and theres a guy actively selling them. I recently saw a Facebook post in the Atari ST page with someone selling them. I think there are threads over on atari-forum.com too, but I don't have them bookmarked sorry, you'd have to search.

Will need to get the missus to search Facebook for this later. Sounds good. Dongle makes more sense than cracked code. Problem I have is I pull 5v usb from the edge connector so will have to fathom that out as well

Well I guess I REALLY wanted a MIDI Guitar. When I couldn't find one at the right price on eBay I guess I just ended up thinking about something else. Now I've remembered these things exist I'm back on eBay searching.

Odds of getting a nice one cheap I imagine are slim... Let's see

I bought this RockBand 3 Keytar recently for £10 :lol: (it has a real Midi port)

It has fixed channels (1, 10) but it's alright for me as I'm not that musical. I've only used it with MaxYMiser so far.

A cruiser power play. Decent but squeaky. Worth it for the 80s theme alone though :D

Noted! I bought a brand new Atari joystick off Amazon. I was looking for something else a bit more usable than the quickshot. Neither are that good lol. That joystick looked familiar and much better than what I have!

Back to MIDI again. Ok keyboard is here. I've got CUBASE tutorial video on YouTube ready to go. CUBASE loads, records something from the keyboard but if course doesn't play anything but a metronome sound. I've no idea why. Essentially I need to RTFM at this point.


I do have just one more MIDI question. I found this link where users are discussing things waaaaaaaaaaay over my head.

My question is... I understand the chap here wants tight timing. What kind of timing is he on about? Cans someone please summarise in complete noob terms what he actually wants? Do we not have modern sequencers on Windows PCs? I just find that a little bit odd.

You would think a PC and a MIDI card would be tighter than an Atari ST. No? Surely that's what a professional recording studio would use. Why wouldn't they?

Just to update on this folks. I've got things working together but the combined midi/out/thru port on the PSS-780 is feeding the midi back in a loop.

I take it I need a breakout box or a midi controller box of sorts. As I can't disable this MIDI pass through on the Yamaha synth.

How would this be resolved? Suggestions welcome!

Selling the Yamaha back to eBay and buying something else probably lol!

Does the Yamaha synth have a dedicated MIDI thru port?

How are you connectin the MIDI cable between the synth and the Atari?
