exxos's DFB1 trials

Is the installation of the DFB1 as simple as it sounds, just plugging in to expansion port and adding a heatsink?

If so, which of the two heatsinks in the store would be better, or at least a good compromise as I want to be able to put the lid back on the Falcon at some point?

The ones currently sold in the store already have a heatsink fitted.

The things are marginally wider than the CPU for maximum cooling. However the height is very small. I wrote about all this in another thread somewhere. Heatsinks could not be to tall because otherwise they would hit the resistors on the bottom of the keyboard. However the heatsinks fitted have a bit of clearance from the bottom of the keyboard .

The new Exxos PSU output was measured as 5.01 so should be ok there - I think.

If you have the later PSU with a preset, that has the 5V adjust. So you can set it to 5.10V easily.

Brilliant - thanks for the reply, and yes the PSU has the adjuster for voltage so will set to 5.10 first.

I saw a youtube vid last night of a guy benchmarking various Atari machines with Frontier and he used one of these - seemed awesome!

I think I might have seen the benchmark video before though I did not notice any power supplies at least not flicking through it just :shrug:

I think that was the guy who I commented on that he is one of the few people that actually knows how to calibrate GB6 properly :lol:

Sorry, I meant he used a DFB1 not a replacement PSU - but I think he did mention you at some point, can't remember why!

Glad you enjoyed the video (and the DFB1). Just to be 100% transparent the DFB1 I used was a hobbyist built one. From what I've read about the Exxos built ones is that they are more refined and stable. I highly recommend it!

I've fitted one of the 40MHz initial Exxos batch in my Falcon...

Just one jumper to remove then fit the accelerator (plugs in pretty easily).

I've got an Exxos PSU in there as well as that runs very cool compared to the original PSU.

I've checked that Logic runs ok with it fitted (can't remember if it was using TT Ram or not though) - MIDI out to my SC8820 seemed just fine.

Which programs are you worried about the compatibility with the accelerator?
Happy to try them if I can...

One more item to note about compatibility. You can use a switch to toggle between the DFB1 or the standard 16mhz 68030 on the motherboard.

For the most part I’ve not had any compatibility issues running accelerated outside of games. Many of the games I’ve tried also work too.

You do need to be running nvdi though.

Only had ten minutes to play with it but it feels even quicker than the quick test I ran!

Installed this morning before going out for the day, 5 minutes max.

Then home tonight, couple of drinks in the local, watched the boxing then a quick play.

Looking forward to more tomorrow!
