Wiki dead links

Post by exxos »

Thought I start a new topic for links.

For example :

1.PNG
Essential Atari ST utilities part 1 and part 2 by Hallvard Tangeraas
URL : http://gem.win.co.nz/hall/pages/files1.html

Has been dead since 2013 according to wayback https://web.archive.org/web/20130213212 ... iles1.html

I will need a lot of help to fix the links. I can't rebuild the entire wiki on my own. I need people to volunteer to investigate all the broken links and help fix them in one respect or another. A LOT of links are broken on just the main index page. The sites / page vanished years ago.

While links can go to the wayback machine, I would prefer if someone can clone these sites so I can host them on the wiki itself. I think only having 1 copy on wayback isn't a good idea..

Sure, I do it all the time -- when I find a dead link, I try to google its current version and replace with wayback as the last resort. Just make it online. ;)

Can you set up a spider to find dead links and post them all here? I'd be happy to take 10 or so and find their equivalent today OR if they are archived.

The two mentioned above will need to be replaced with an internal Wiki page as while the HTML has been archived the Atari files it intended uses to download haven't. We could mirror that site and I'd hunt for all the files it refers to but a new Wiki page would be better.

What is a good (unlikely to go away) resource for Atari apps/programs? The equivalent of Aminet for the Amiga? ftp.uni-paderborn.de?

There are many dead-link spiders. It would be good to have an internal-editable version accessible from the outside if you want us to work on it before re-launch.

Yeah if the site can be "rebuilt" it can either go on the wiki , or if its a mess, I can just host a mirror of the site anyway and the wiki can link to that mirror instead.

Things like "dadhacker" , the blog has gone, but the content is only a couple of pages, so it can be dumped into wiki pages easily.

Yep I will run a spider and it will be a start.

As said above, whichever is ultimatly best/easier. If sites can be cloned to the wiki then great. Though if its huge, a html dump might be the way to go and ill host the mirror.

Not sure anymore. Only TOSEC I guess these days ? I've not used any FTP sites for years. I can host files as long as its not turning into GB's of files. Theres about 10GB left on the server disk IIRC. So a few 100MB here and there isn't;'t going to be a problem anyway.

Once I've dealt with all the spam, anyone who can help with links and pages , I will give the server IP address so people can work on it. There is no use making it public in the state its in (even after removing all the spam) as most of the links are dead now. A lot of links went 10+ years ago. Theres are links to forums which have long since gone, they are only on the wayback machine now.

I can't seem to export links as text in a simple format. But this is a screenshot of what seems to be missing at a glance.

2.PNG
3.PNG

All sorts of sites / files missing all over the place.

There is a lot of french / german articles which should really have English translations. But one page is this one. https://temlib.org/AtariForumWiki/index.php/VT52.TXT but on my wiki it shows differently.

Capture.PNG

I think either way, it has invalid characters, but problem is , where is the source article ? Or is there a French/English person who can do a proper clean up and translation in both languages ?
