Atari 1050 FDD resurrection

Post by mgi »

Hi,

So I was given an old 1050 and would like to make it work. First I need to find a PSU and to source SIO cable. Any recommendations on where to get PSU in Uk? Am I right it is the same as for 400/800/1200xl? Any cheap sources of SIO cables? I can see them around £22 on eBay?

I've bought from this seller before.

Works great with my 1050 and 800.
The power supply is 9v ac.
The same one used for the 800 and 400, I believe the XL series uses a different type of PSU.

Be aware that PSU is a US 120v item so not suitable for the UK, but 9v AC output is correct.

Yeah sorry 😅 if I had one from the UK on hand I'd grab a pic but I only have the US ones for my systems.
Meant more to show the output since it's shouldn't be hard to find a matching power supply from that.

Thanks for recommendations. I have opened today the FDD drive and found free flowing PCB - could this be an upgrade of sorts?

Having the output is worth having for sure, Atari were a bit weird IMHO by having AC output PSUs, the 1010 is the same.

I guess it was easier (cheaper!) to rectify inside the devices and have a straight AC/AC transformer.

Looks something like a Happy or US Doubler. The 6502 replaces the 6507 that's originally installed.

The 1050 is essentially almost a 2600 with a disk controller bolted on and no video out.

Theres a very good document about 1050 repairs, I'll see if I can find it, as I had to repair a 1050 myself.

Ok, here is a link to the adjustment procedure for the 1050: 1050 Adjustment procedure

Oscilloscope is required :)

Thanks for this! Will see if or when I get to this point - may even get myself oscilloscope - you never know :)
For now I straighten the legs, fitted this PCB again, checked the GND on 6502 if it is connected properly and waiting for PSU and SIO cable.
