So, after some investigation at the weekend, I decided that the resistor I'd previously reflowed to get the expansion card working still looked iffy.

There is a small cluster of resistors, which includes R10 that I'd previously reflowed:

PXL_20230710_080433964-edit-20230710090529.jpg

This isn't my actual board, but a donor board, but it shows R10-R13 clearly. Looking very closely, the soldering on all 3 remaining resistors seemed suspect, and I wondered if what had caused the damage to R10, had also done similar, but less visible damage to the others.

Since I have 2 other donor boards, I decided it was time to pull them all off and replace from one of those spare boards.

So far, it ran for about 6 hours yesterday afternoon/evening with no signs of a fault. I'm running another test today, and if all is well, I will try BlueSCSI again with an image kindly suppled by @olivier.jan and see if I have any more success.

Fingers crossed!

Well, so far it's been running since just before 09:00 and all is well, and that is with the case on so I'm feeling positive.

@olivier.jan

It boots from BlueSCSI - kind of:

PXL_20230710_124451401.jpg

It get's this far and crashes, even with shift held down, so I wonder if the SE/30 specifics are giving it a hard time. Whilst it's working, I may well see if I can prep the disk and re-install my own copy of System 7, since I know it sees and boots from your disk image.

EDIT: No, I still can't initialise the disk, however this is definitely progress, since I now know that it'll actually boot from the drive.

It's probably a 68030 kernel, which won't run on a 68000.

Yep, I was thinking the same.

I may see if I can build a disk under Basilisk for Mac Classic, see if it'll boot.

Hmm, interesting.

I found a 2GB image containing OS 6.0.8l which actually booted just fine, but I tried to upgrade it to 7.0 and it did it, but crashed on boot. Strange. Going to try yet another SD card to see if it's that that's the problem.

When you try to initialise the disk, what kind of message do you get ? Which software do you use to initialize ?
If you haven't tried already, here are the two file for setting up the HD.
First expand the Apple_HD_Setup until you have a Mac 68k executable.
Expand the patch and apply the patch, then you can run the Apple HD Setup and it will work on any SCSI HD, not only the one sold by Apple.
Also, make sure to have your Volumes < 2Gb.
