You really don't want to dual-boot on the same drive as Windows, literally begging for trouble.

I can't second this advice enough. A Windows 10 routine update decided it needed to resize my windows partition and deleted ALL other partitions on my machine not too long ago... Fortunately, I was able to recover them after a lot of effort, but that is plain ridiculous. Windows considers itself to be in charge of your computer, not you, and will feel free to delete partitions it doesn't recognise without warning. Microsoft never even acknowledged that doing that was a problem.

(I continued on to the next post so I see that you're all good in that regard, but I will leave my rant here because I need to rant in order to survive)

Its why I won't updrade to win10. Just to many "random" things which it seems to do. I'm not buying all new hardware to work with win11 either. Just had enough of it all now. I can't afford to wake up one morning and have it screwing around with stuff itself. I don't want to wake up one morning and win10 is now win12 and nothing works anymore. I need a stable OS for my workflow. I want to decide what my computer does, not micro$oft!

Ironically I was at my girlfriends mums today, she runs win10. How she has it all setup isn't ideal, she has nothing but trouble and said all her downloaded files vanished for no reason. I was using for about half a hour and it was painful to say the least.

I think if Linux had a proper windows 7 interface it would be good for people like me. Though thats never going to happen. Currently I can't group drives in "file manager" which is called Nemo I think. Not a deal breaker, but lots of things are just a litlte bit harder/annoying.

The KDE/Plasma interface may be a better one for you. GNOME3 is “esoteric” to say the least.

KDE has a “Start Menu”. The default is similar to Win10 but right-click upon it and set the “Alternatives” to “Menu” and it’s similar to Win7.

As for Windows executables, you may get it working under Wine.

I did try one, supposed to do grouping called dolphin, but it had very few options compared to whats advertised. Some forums saying you don't get all the options depending on how it's installed. I didn't understand that so removed it.

The start menu I don't use all that much, I used winstep extreme which is great, but doesn't look like they do a Linux version

As for Windows executables, you may get it working under Wine.

Yeah I've installed it but doesn't seem to do anything.
Mostly it seems to hint at installing windows in a virtual machine drive or something like that.

Managed to run the game server via Wine, but my girlfriend can't connect.

I've disabled UFW and tried to add port 3555 to be open, but she still cant connect

Tried for ages last night and didn't get anywhere. Oddly it does show in the global server list. Myself and my girlfriend can see my hosted game. But when she tries to connect, she just gets connection refused. Refused from what ?!

I think it will all just have to go on the back burner for now. I just don't have time to constantly screw around with this stuff.

There is also some bug where when I select a windows like chrome, the wheel mouse first movement isn't registered

Had a realisation just that my router's port forwarding is linked to a fix IP address which is linked to a certain MAC address. So basically my router would be blocking mint as all the addresses and ports be screwed up.

So spent the past 2 hours trying to figure out how to force a IP and Mac address in mint .I think I've done it but it wasn't half annoying. Mint seems to auto create a network profile itself. Great in some respects. But I had to delete it like 70 times as it kept using its own profile rather than the one I was trying to create

Anyway, need to try the game out next to see if it connects now....

Tried the game server and no go It forgot my new Mac address. Though I've got it set in wired network connections. It created it's own connection again it seems to ignore th Mac I put in the connection options and only seems to work doing it from the command line.

The connection on/off is odd. If I do it on the taskbar , it creates a automatic connection and it ignores my custom connection. It also turns wired connection on in control panel. If I turn the control panel connection on, nothing happens and the wired connection stays off in the task bar. So I'm confused if it's supposed to be like that or not. But seems like a load of odd bugs to me.

Sorted all that out and now I can't get the game server to run. I can't remember if there was some trick in getting in running now. But the wine thing pops up some wizard and no matter what options I chose it crashes

So I don't know if my IP tweaks worked as I seem to be in a worse state than i was before now
