R-Type is pretty cool on the PC Engine
If it ain't broke, test it to Destruction.

Hmmm.

So if what I'm reading is correct (I've seen it a bunch of times so I suspect it is), the CD-ROM doesn't become active until you press the 'RUN' button on the main boot screen.

If this is genuinely the case, I can't currently press the button as I don't have a controller, so it's going to have to wait until next week before I can test any more, once the controller arrives.

Annoying, but on a positive note, the machine has been sat all day running and the screen is clear and sharp and not even the voltage regs are getting that hot.

Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

Well, it seems shipping from Germany happened overnight :)

Items are out for delivery right now, so I am hoping that I can progress the Duo in the next week. Even if the CD-ROM doesn't work, I'll at least for now have a PC-Engine, which is something I was aiming for, and hopefully I can fix it in the long term.

Heh. Been a while since I posted, but I can't NOT post on this thread.
I got my PC Engine DUO-R on the 25th of May :-D
(Got mine with a controller)
I can confirm you can just burn the CD images from certain sites to a blank CD-R and they work fine.
(I also have an SD Hu-Card now as well)

They are certainly amazing machines for the era. Now I just need to work out where to fit it in my console collection.

Ahh, yours is the R model, what's the difference, other than the obvious casing differences?

Interesting about the CD's I will have to look for certain sites and I am definitely going to get an SD HuCard as well. It seems incredible that these had an 8 bit CPU and could do what they do, when they did it :)

It's a cost-down. They removed the headphone jack and drive lock switch.
