That bit of metal looks like a bent pin to me, as in bent up and outwards which is unusual.

No it’s the leg on the new chip that’s bent I think

Just grabbed a pic to show the state the floppy cable was in when I got the machine and noticed that piece of metal isn't there.

So yeah, looks like a disaster.

Yeah as PhilC rightly says, looks like the bottom of that pin got caught on insertion and has bent/folded on itself. Just take it out and straighten it back up again.

There's supposed to be a plastic clip covering that floppy connector, perhaps it has fallen off while being unplugged?

Don't worry you can re-crimp it without specialist tools if you find it.
