On my Raven I have the ET4000ax graphics card and the Picogus. When I put any other isa card, the system becomes unstable and crashes at various times. When I cover the 16 bit connector, and try to run the 8 bit card (at least I think so)

the system becomes stable and the network card becomes quite usable, even if navigation with Cab freezes. But with UIP.TOS it works great.
Today is Sunday, Roma played yesterday, and in my free time I tried with the debug ROM, to use 16-bit Isa cards. When they crash this is the final part of the report:

Code: Select all

ide_get_data(0xfff00000, 0x0188d334, 512, 0)
wait_for_not_BSY(0xffefffff, 20)
ide_rw() returned 0
getrec 0x406e8, 0x00004a8c, 0x0
n=2, dm->m_recoff[n]=0x122
rwabs(rw=0, buf=0x0001a2d0, count=1, recnr=65535, dev=3, lrecnr=264202)
rwabs translated: sector=788490, count=1
ide_read(0x20, 0, 0, 788490, 1, 0x0001a2d0, 0)
ide_select_device(0xffefffff, 0)
ide_rw_start(0xffefffff, 0, 0, 788490, 1, 0x20)
wait_for_not_BSY(0xffefffff, 600)
ide_get_data(0xfff00000, 0x0001a2d0, 512, 0)
wait_for_not_BSY(0xffefffff, 20)
ide_rw() returned 0
xread(6,15160): rc=15160
BDOS returns: 0x00003b38
and

Code: Select all

 ide_get_data(0xfff00000, 0x01873db4, 512, 0)
wait_for_not_BSY(0xffefffff, 20)
ide_rw() returned 0
getrec 0x40726, 0x00004a8c, 0x0

rwabs(rw=0, buf=0x0001a4e4, count=1, recnr=65535, dev=3, lrecnr=264264)
rwabs translated: sector=788552, count=1
ide_read(0x20, 0, 0, 788552, 1, 0x0001a4e4, 0)
ide_select_device(0xffefffff, 0)
ide_rw_start(0xffefffff, 0, 0, 788552, 1, 0x20)
wait_for_not_BSY(0xffefffff, 600)
ide_get_data(0xfff00000, 0x0001a4e4, 512, 0)
wait_for_not_BSY(0xffefffff, 20)
ide_rw() returned 0
xread(6,2271): rc=2271
BDOS returns: 0x000008df
It seems to me that the ide transfer has something to do with it...

Among my old cards I found a Technisat with a 45,000 crystal on board. The temptation was high and after having unsoldered it I mounted it on Raven. Now I can navigate without problems with the Cab browser!
I don't know the reason but it works.
Now I have to try removing the tape from the network card...

I tried games as well as web browsing:
- with the 45,000 crystal the navigation is perfect but the games freeze,
- while with the 48,000 crystal the browser freezes but the games are perfect.

The unpatched network card continues to crash in both cases.

Very strange indeed! Especially needing to mask off the 16bit part of the network card edge connector.
Feels like perhaps some signal on the 16bit part is conflicting with something else, but then again the graphics card isn't patched and it works.

Yes, it's really strange! The graphics card is not patched, and it works great. If I add other 16-bit cards (IDE controller), the system crashes, but with the patch everything is fine. .
I could have the card revisited, but first, I would like to rule out components that I could replace. Another MC68150FN40 is arriving soon along with other parts bought for the Eiffel board. Could the MC68901 be involved? The ones received were not exactly in good condition...
The processor is currently the 060 rev4, which would work at 75MHz, but the problem also occurred with the 060 rev 6 that I mounted on BFG9060.
What else would you try to replace? Thanks again for the support!

Small update: the MC68150FN40 arrived but did not give the desired results.
I'm testing an MC68150FN33 with the crystal at 45,000 and the results are encouraging, but the system is still a bit unstable.

At the moment I've found a combination of 48,000 crystal and MC68150FN40 which seems to make both games and web browsing work, which still seems a bit buggy...
A piece of advice for those preparing to build Raven060: don't buy cheap sockets but look for those that could be of better quality...

But what should go into positions P05 and P06?
