Not sure what the reset thing is all about, I booted into the desktop a lot when testing and never had any issues. Wondering if your reset circuit is in need of an upgrade

I didn't do it because the reset circuit was working just fine when I had it.

My only other thought is that you have a new PSU and I'm wondering if it isn't starting until you hit reset. I used my bench PSUs throughout testing.

Do you have another PSU you can test with, even a 5v bench one would do.

Only thing I've found I have to do when turning the machine on I have to press the reset button for it to jump into life. Not a big deal really.

Yep, caps in the reset circuit are the wrong value and are duff these days. It's a well documented mandatory fix.

Don't blame you.. but you can bodge caps over the top of the existing ones.. So not much can go wrong (in theory)

Well, I got brave and tacked a 22uF capacitor over C100 as per your instructions in the essential mods and now it boots up no problem. Don't have to press reset now to get it to boot into life. I'm not gonna take the original cap out while it's working.

Nice @BrettRogersUK - that counts as successfully diagnosing and fixing the problem - you will soon be gaining confidence & experience.

Keep that healthy dose of scepticism though - always best to play it safe while it's still working!

Slight temperature difference, alignment of the planets etc is all it takes to upset the things.
