I understand and agree to a point with all your reasoning.

I guess it's an end user mindset sort of thing.

e.g. I have a can opener that my nan gave me from 1943. It opens cans and will do (maybe needing a sharpen now and again) till judgement day.

I expect a reasonably similar performance from all my purchases.

PCs and software SHOULD do that (people still use Atari software to do productive things), its just the manufacturers create the obsolescence on purpose.

For a good example, look at MS Office. That had everything you needed 15 years ago. They just changed things (mainly backward compatibility) so you just had to get the newest one.

The only way to jump off the forced obselecance train is to move to an open source free operating system that will continue to get updates forever. I know it's a painful learning curve having to do it all at once (Exxos) but in the long run it will pay off. For me, my transition to Linux was over a period of 10 years. I spent years trying different distros, dual booting, learning. Over those years I hit road blocks, gave up from time to time. Eventually Linux became very good out of the box (I mean distros of course) that it handled all my tasks and software .. and more.
