When SGIs come to play

I've always been a Sun fan myself, having had a few different Ultras over the years (none right now) but always loves the looks of those purple SGIs.

Hey, im also an Octane owner! I have version 1 and 2, I picked up the second one from a Digital house, came with full ram and a v12 odyssey board.
im having issues with getting Irix installed as they don't have a cd rom drive. and im lacking some scsi adapters to get the Sun external DVD rom drive hooked up and communicating with the octane.
IRIX on all the other machines is a breeze compared to the Octane.

I was very close to buying an Onyx 2..but the price turned me off, and it was a rckmounted beast with an origin 2000 on top, the thing weighed 60kg.

my fave though is the purple Indigo 2 I have. just such a lovely looking machine, the Iris gets too much praise as the better looking machine but I don't think so.

Luckily I have a full set of install CDs and an external SGI drive as well. Turns out that it really doesn't like other drives!! I did have a running Indy once too and ended up getting rid of it, something that I have kicked myself for ever since. I'd love other machines, but they're just too expensive these days.

Loving that you've got dual cpus! I'd love a dual cpu module for my octane!

And 2GB ram too. I expect this machine cost rather a lot when new!! Will try the hinv -m thing.

Bit more than I want to spend on it just now, but I may revisit.

Also tested the PSU, CPU board and graphics card from my second machine last night, PSU and CPU were good, but graphics board seems to be dead. More investigations required.

2nd machine is unfortunately single CPU, I 'think' an R12000, just trying to figure that out. At present I will likely hold onto it to try and repair first and foremost, and secondly as a backup parts machine.

Need to try and get hinv out of that machine if I can. The single CPU module works in my other chassis so will see if I can get into the PROM setup and do that.

So not the R12000 I thought. Need to verify the XBOW I think as well now I know the CPU is good, PSU is good and graphics isn't.
