Looks like it's arrived at work in one piece. I'll have to pick it up on Sunday morning.

God home and popped into work to collect the Betamax VCR...

Here're the unboxing pictures...

And...

It works! Though the remote doesn't seem to.

It needs a bit of a clean but it's not too bad.

My Dad preferred Betamax over VHS, though eventually he had to cave as he couldn't get the tapes anymore. He never used pre-recorded tapes though, just recorded from TV.

It's being delivered by EVRI... Oh dear.

There may be a rebuild of a smashed video recorder thread coming up, if it arrives at all.
I've actually decided never to use Evri again after they 'lost' two, yes two CRT monitors in the last 6 months.

Maybe they both slipped out of the drivers pocket and fell down a drainhole cover while they weren't noticing.

I just wish they would admit its been stolen or smashed. And if they don't refund my insurance value AND postage, I will consider that theft.

Sorry Stephen, rant now over. Looks like you got your parcel intact though, so well done/congrats! ;)

I've three commercial tapes, Return of the Jedi, Ghostbusters and a murder mystery called "Deathtrap" with Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve. Oh, and my graduation video, which I'm going to preserve.

The picture quality is far better than VHS.

The general consensus is that it was better than VHS, although Ive never actually seen the output from Betamax IRL myself.

Would you have a SVHS deck? I would be interested to see how it compared.

Yeah, I have a JVC SVHS VCR. Not quite a fair comparison as the SVHS is connected via S-Video but the Betamax looks comparable.
