It's just my opinion though...
I get where you're coming from, but it is a means to an end - I can have the whole Intellivision library on a single cart and like the A8Pico cart, the Pi isn't providing any additional horsepower, it's just the storage and ROM management capabilities.

I just want easy access to a game library.

I perfectly undesrtand your point of view, and would probably do the same here...

I once had a Raspberry Pi in an extension for my ZX Spectrum. It was the ZX-HD HDMI interface:

Within a 3D printed case, it looks more "natural"...

I know it’s a bit perverse having the peripheral’s processing power being many orders of magnitude greater than the main system but you could say that about a printer these days.

If the Raspberry Pi is merely acting as a peripheral which is doing a job as a slave to the retro system and is doing so using an interface used when the device was new then I see no issue. E.g. an RGB2HDMI unit or the PicoGUS.
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

I see no issue too, but my meager tolerance in this area ends here...

And I still prefer the old school alternative if possible.

8-)

(I know, I'm a stubborn old mule).

I have to agree, especially as it's getting difficult and expensive to collect carts let alone other media such as disks and cassettes and the space needed to store them.

For example, there were 129 cartridges originally released for the CV, and they seem to go for about £20 each, so to buy all of them would be £2580, money I'd rather spend on other things, especially when I can build a single cart to hold them all for probably about £50 give or take. It's a similar story for the Intellivision, with 132 original games, though they do go for about half that of CV games.

Add to that the 261 cartridges for both systems would take up more space than I have available for such things.

So I'll take the Pi based storage :)

I know it's not everybody's cup of tea, but I have SD based storage for nearly all of my collection bar one or two where it doesn't exist or is very expensive, and it's a whole load more practical, though with my Atari 8 Bit machines I do still sometimes feel like setting up with my 1050's and and old CRT TV and having a proper old School session :)

I'm slightly naughty at the moment though:

I'm running this off an A8 Picocart because there's just no room for the 1050's. The 1050's, to be fair, are smaller than my 1541, but the Picocart is far simpler, though my Side3 cart is much better and works very well with the installed U1MB & VBXE + Pokeymax combo this machine has :)

@rubber_jonnie

No matter how you enjoy your retro stuff.

I was just wondering while looking at all your pictures if you would have enough juice to feed all your monitors, consoles and computers if powered at the same time.

I guess you're the customer British Energy (or is it EDF Energy now ?) loves very much.

It's not that large of a range of machines, typically I might have 4-5 machines running at once as I like seeing my retro stuff running. My permanent slots are a BBC B, Apple IIe, TRS-80 Model 1 and an Atari 400 Mini. I have a couple of slots, for example where my 800XL is that is a hot-swap area so I can put machines/consoles in and out as I want, and on my workbench where I have a small display for when I'm working on stuff or want to do a 'burn in test' after repairs.

However I don't have any CRTs that are in regular use, it's all LCD's fed through my Retrotink or OSSC and for the Apple IIe and TRS-80, they share a display, and you can have both machines on there together as it does picture in picture :)

However, we are with Octopus Energy and have a capped rate, so overall it really isn't very expensive to run and we actually get free electricity some days for a couple of hours and are in credit enough that we have already paid enough to cover winter fuel costs :)

I have my wife to thank for getting that deal, she did a great job :)
