I just tried it and it simply trashed the whole lot as I thought it would anyway...

Problem is I have a copy of all my files on D:, and C: seems corrupted (not opening). So really need to format it, but can't :pullhair:
Depending on the version of HDDRIVER you are using there should be an "Init" button in the "Edit Partitions" dialog box.

Here is the description of the function from the HDDRIVER manual for version 12.53:
Initializing after clicking on "Init" clears all data structures on a partition. This is comparable with parti- tioning but only affects a single partition. This operation is only useful in special cases, for instance, if a par - tition holds files that cannot be deleted correctly for some reason. Additionally the logical sector size and the number of sectors per cluster may be changed. You should only attempt to change these data if you have the required expert knowledge.

thanks wasn't aware of that it would actually be really useful...

I don't seem to have that option but I am using I think version 11.14... I guess I need to go an update again...

As you are already 'up the creek' and have lost the directory and if the 'Init' solution above doesnt magically work:

If the HDDRIVER partition is FAT formatted, would it be worth putting the card into a Windows PC/laptop and use file recovery software?

I know its a long shot, but still...

FreeMiNT downloads (https://tho-otto.de/snapshots/freemint/cpu ) contain mkfatfs.ttp that allows (re)creating a file system on any partition.
And remember: Beethoven wrote his first symphony in C.
