Back to the original question in this thread. My technical background is mechanical engineering / statistics, so all of the minimal electronics coursework I had, I’ve forgotten, but felt confident enough that I could figure it out.
I found that beginning small with simple things and taking on bigger tasks little by little, I’ve been able to build up a bit of competence in troubleshooting and repair. I think I was where you are at about 2 years ago. You don’t make progress unless you’re trying things out. Learn from those you trust (the folks here are fantastic) and be willing to take correction.
I’ve been told I’m an idiot (sometimes nicely, sometimes not nicely) more than a few times. Take it and learn from it. In the end the results are what matter most and the best part of this hobby for me is the process of learning and fixing.
In that time, I’ve been able to install Exxos’s 32mhz solder-in booster in an STe, desolder a 68k cpu and add a socket, add multiple solder-in ST ram upgrades, convert multiple ST / Amiga PSU’s to using Meanwell power supplies, successfully recap some SMD Mac’s and Amiga’s….and a fair amount more.
Just start small and build up project by project.
