What happens to landlines in 2025?

Here in the US, with "Ma Bell", I found I was paying $15-16 a month extra
for LD calls, even if I *didn't* make any LD calls. I called about that, they
told me it was "administrative" fees and would not be dropped. I tried to
drop the LD part of the service - nope, they wouldn't do it. So rather than
pay for something that I wasn't even using, I dropped them.

I've got phone service through my cable provider, Optimum. My regular
phone just plugs into a jack in the back of the cable modem. I was lucky
enough to get in on a deal where it's $25 unlimited -> for life <- as long
as I never discontinue service. :)

We moved here just over a year ago and part of the standard package we have via BT is VOIP phones, of which we have 2, to go with our gigabit fibre.

Of course if it all goes to hell in a handbasket, it would have been nice to have an actual landline that worked, but around here it seems it's "Not a thing".
