Not sure off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure I got them from you :)exxos wrote: 26 Nov 2021 12:04The problem is what brand are they.. If you have cheap sockets in particular ones sold by rapid etc, you likely will have contact problems anyway.rubber_jonnie wrote: 26 Nov 2021 11:41 I think, all things considered, I will remove the old double wipe sockets that I left there for convenience sake. I have some suitable turned pin stuff I can use, so I will do that.
This is why I only went for branded sockets on the H5 and only recommend 3M. because pretty much every other socket has been garbage which I have tested over the years.. Of course you probably remember the PLCC nightmare etc.

Re: STE having a timeout.....
Aaaaaand, we're fixed :)
Can you see the culprit?
How about now?
It just shows how easily the machined pins can break off, and bear in mind this has had very little handling, I literally just unplugged it to check something.
And it was a bugger to see because of the other pins around it too, all glistening and gold!!
It's nice to have a quick fix from time to time :)

Oops!
Yes, brass pins do not handle bending well. They are very brittle.

Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

Re: STE having a timeout.....
Yep, thin pins are not ideal. The square ones are a lot stronger but they cause other problems , Like if you solder the square pins on the motherboard, it is practically impossible to get the buggers out again! And the square pins will contact a lot better in the socket, but will then destroy the socket anyway. Certainly nothing is ever ideal.
The round pins are not generally too bad unless they get bent and then bent back as they tend to snap

Just glad you managed to fix it!
Still not had time/opportunity to fix one STE (broken SIMM sockets) and install the 2x Exxos TOS switchers plus 1x accelerator in the other two...hopefully I won't have too many problems (when I finally get time).

Re: STE having a timeout.....
I'm not a huge fan of the brass pins, I've had soooo many break off of soooo many things, but the square pins just don't work in PCBs like you say, it's always a bloody compromise. It must have broken off almost immediately when I first pulled it out, but so difficult to notice amongst the other pins.exxos wrote: 26 Nov 2021 17:56 Yep, thin pins are not ideal.
