4x256kbits are the biggest FPM DRAMs in DIP-20 packages I know about. They are in sockets probably for service reasons, not for expansion. There were different versions of those extension, with 8 DIP-20 sockets, or even with 4 30-pin SIMM sockets.
It has a neat idea with this precision socket with soldered ribbon wires, instead of a PCB adapter for Shifter. Thanks to this, you may still have the Shifter and the adapter in sockets, and everything should fit into the Shifter can. In case of PCB Shifter adapters*, you have to either solder the adapter into the motherboard, and put the shifter into the adapter socket, or solder the Shifter into the adapter PCB, and put the adapter into the socket on the motherboard. If you wish to keep both sockets, you'll need to cut the can lid.
* - Maybe Exxos adapter has shorter pins or lower socket and fits with both sockets, but I never had. One I've seen - didn't fit with both sockets.

What are the downsides of taking the lid off the can?
