Icky - Progress - STF Remake Slimline Edition

Post by Icky »

I have got my hands on another STF Remake board (thanks to Terrible Fire) and have been pondering what to do with it.

My thoughts so far are to try and build the board without all its towers of un-f*ck boards by trying to patch on the board the corrections.

Am looking to build it on one level (not the 3-4 tiers it currently is) and fit it into a slim metal case. Not using sockets with insight on the first attempt will also be a factor.

A couple of areas are to put in the new reset circuit and drop the video circuitry in favour of the Falcon DAC. Hopefully this will help.

The build won't be as fast / manic as the first one but we'll get there in the end.

The work on this board is slow with all the other projects on the go. No soldering has started yet as I am just looking at the areas to improve to make this slimmer and also have been discussing with exxos on the next steps he has been thinking of doing on the current STF Remake boards to test a bit more.

I think there is some hackery in the midst if any of the ALPHA board folk are up for the challenge. I'll let exxos lay those challenges down :)

Any how back to the update. Looking at all the Un-f*ck boards resembling the Manhattan skyline, with hind sight (which is always a good thing), I am seeing if I can improve on these a little.

So the first change here is the 1772 Buffer Board. The original board sits over the top of the ACSI port and requires a few DIL stacks to get there. It makes it difficult to plug and unplug and ACSI devices.

One great thing though about this board is that it fits perfectly in an original STFM (see thread below).

https://www.exxosforum.co.uk/forum/viewt ... 918#p18918

So with exxos' permission (always respect other peoples work and efforts :)) I modified the board to a compact version that sits in the opposite direction of the original board.

The compact 1772 buffer board came through today.

The board is more compact than the original.

:bravo:

You could have got it even smaller with a SMT 245 on the bottom side of the PCB under the 1772 :P :P

Thanks exxos. This is how it looks on the STF Remake board now.

It only needs one DIL stack to get it over the DMA. Thats two less that the original I feel like I have a win for the Slimline Edition. In fact I am starting to think my challenge is to see how many DIL stacks I can remove.

I have 3x spare 1772 Compact PCBs for the Remake board. Will stop the over hang of the original board on the ACSI port.

If anyone wants one just PM me. Once they are gone they are gone.

EDIT: Only 2 left

This project is now abandoned as the H4 has taken over. The ALPHA board is to be framed and put on the wall.
