The power LED is software controlled. It won't turn on without the CPU telling it to.
If you had a keyboard it would be using the LEDs to show how the POST is progressing.

Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

Re: Sun Ultrasparc
To satisfy my Sun workstation craving I accepted a freebie from work 26 years ago. It's been under the bed in the front room almost all this time. They had lots of different models up for grabs. I went with the Sun Ultra 5 as unlike older models it's practically a PC but with an Ultra SPARC processor. It has IDE for HDD & CDROM, 31Khz VGA output, standard PCI slots and standard DRAM slots.

I'm also in the Sun club, I have an Ultra 60 with 2 x 360mhz CPUs, XVR-600 graphics, 2GB RAM, gigabit ethernet and USB.

Nice to see all the Sun computer peoplestephen_usher wrote: Mon Nov 02, 2026 11:41 pm The power LED is software controlled. It won't turn on without the CPU telling it to.

Very Sunny indeed.
So tried with keyboard connected. The on/off switch on the keyboard turns on the main unit.
The keyboard beeps one time.
The light on the keys come on for a second and turn off. The caps lock starts blinking and then stays on. After a couple of seconds the front led blinks ones and after that the caps lock turns off. I can’t turn the system off with the keyboard. I assume the computer is in a sort of fail safe mode. As there is no videocard or serial connection. And the nvram is probably dead.
No new front light blink codes
Now need to wait for the cables.

With no valid NVRAM settings it will drop into diagnostic mode and spend a good few minutes doing the diagnostics and then try to do a network boot.

Re: Sun Ultrasparc
This thread makes me want to buy a SUN4/50 SparcStation IPX.
I can have one for a good price, but without a keyboard though...
