So the audio issue was I had to open

sudo nano /etc/pulse/daemon.conf

Add in

avoid-resampling = yes

Then run from prompt

pulseaudio -k

Went for my tea while steam downloaded and came back and it had locked up solid. Had to "pull power" from the PC and reboot :roll:

The brightness control I found doesn't work with MX it seems :(

Good luck with MX, I didn't realise you'd done so much in so little time already, was gonna reply earlier.

1. I tested Chrome on my system, no problems. IMO those transparency issues are a Mint related thing.
2. You should be OK with KDE Plasma on MX. Just bare in mind it isn't their 'flagship desktop' option. What does that mean? It *probably* means that primary/main development happens on the XFCE desktop, ie; more bugs get fixed.
3. You are notorious for running old hardware (I say in a kind way :D ) XFCE is designed to be less resource hungry, where as KDE is designed to be very eye-candy and hardware intensive. So in my estimation, I'd have gone for XFCE.
4. But that is the beauty of Linux! Choice, you get to pick your poison :) Unlike proprietary operating systems. Infact, with a simple command-line option you can install two desktop environments and swap between them on the login prompt. (But this can get messy as each desktop system has it's own set of apps/programs which will be visible to both desktop environments and can get cluttered, so I'd recommend only using one at a time)

Just my thoughts. I just want you to have the best Linux experience possible :) I hope MX goes better. The font's being better is already a good sign.

MX seems OK(ish) .. up until it fails to launch my game now. The screen just goes black then goes back to desktop. It worked in MINT :roll:

Its also froze solid twice. So I don't think its a stable as MINT :roll:

Odd , Proton 8 worked in MINT was sure of it. Using V5 now and game booted, but seems its not got my Nvidia drivers installed :(

OH there is a MX tool for installing Nvidia drivers, cool!

Well that went downhill fast :roll: I kept having to press f11 to change the boot drive because it would not work otherwise. So I'll change it in the bios to always boot from that drive so I did not have to select it, now it seems have lost all my hard drives from the BIOS boot list and won't let me add them even though they all listed under a different menu :wtf:

So now I cannot boot in Windows or Linux. If I try I just get some stupid grub prompt and that's it :roll:

So Linux has done a right number on my win7 drive :pullhair: it seems to have deleted the bootloader. And for some reason, MSI bios doesn't see it as a bootable drive so doesn't list it.

Now I can't even use the windows recovery cdmto fix it as it doesn't have the drivers for my motherboard or m.2 drive. It doesn't even see my usb keyboard or mouse anyway.

Now my usb stick with MX doesn't seem to want to do anything. I'm just stuck at a flashing usb stick which isn't loading anything.

Anyone know how to fix this stupid grub issue ?

I just get a grup terminal and that is it. If I use ls seems I can see both the drives but that is as far as I can get.

I was booting off the MX USB stick to get into the menu where I could boot into Windows, but now that is not even seeing the drive anymore.

Call Lee I have no way of booting Windows 7 or Linux now other than booting Linux of USB stick :(

I have tried the boot repair tool and that says it fixed successfully but nothing changed :(

So basically my whole PC is nothing more than a door stop now :(

I did think of trying to restore a backup but my backup program does not recognize the m.2 drive from the recovery CD. So I would have to restore the baclup onto a normal SSD and hope it boots in copy it back to the m.2 in windows. But that will be ongoing for hours :(

Figured it out :roll: Seem when I selected the 860 drive to automatically boot I selected EUFI which causes the grub not to work :roll:

I hate computers, just getting way to complicated these days :(


It has made me realise there is no way to do a full disk restore from the rescue CD as it doesn't "see" my m.2 drive :roll:

Figured out the rescue cd problem. Basically my first few attempts blue screened :roll: but after working out what drivers to install, I managed to include them on the rescue cd! Now it detects my m.2 drive and also my usb keyboard and mouse. It seems to take forever to load but it gets there in the end :) oh I've got it on a freebee coilcraft usb stick I had lay around. Might sticky tape it to the wall so I don't loose it.

What I don't get is why grub has to trash the win7 boot loader. I mean grub is on the Linux drive, it's got nothing to do with windows.

Problem is, if that Linux drive dies, I'd not be able to simply boot from the windows drive anymore :roll:

So I'll create a new windows 7 setup cd with my new mb drivers and see if I can repair the win7 boot loader. But I guess that would break something.

But it's stupid IMO that Linux has effectively destroyed my main system drive while installing :roll: That's a big no no in my book.
