Elite - More Atari 8 bit coverage

Post by rubber_jonnie »

So I had a great chat with @Wrathchild at CL5 and the end result was he kindly sent over his port of Elite for the Atari 8 bit machines, which is a different port to the Firebird version I mentioned the other day.

So here is a blatant Elite promotion:

From left to right we have:

1. Elite Tube/Master enhanced edition running on my PiTube direct upgraded BBC B. This is an amazing expanded version.
2. Elite Firebird version running on my 800
3. Elite Final Beta from Wrathchild running on my Atari 400 Mini
4.Elite running on my Apple IIe

And last but no means least as I didn't have enough screens for all of them, the self demo version of Elite, which I might add looks fabulous!!!

So you wait 40 odd years and end up with some great ports of Elite. I believe there are 3 in total now.

So lucky to have a choice :)

ArcElite is my favourite version. I didn't know until recently it wasn't programmed by Bell & Braben. I had always assumed it was as Braben went on to write Zarch for the Archie.

ArcElite deserves the love that the modding scene has been showering the 8-bit version with.

Oddly I've never played the Archie version until today, I need to give it some more love.

Some of ArcElite's unique features have recently been ported to AtariST version (who's source code was released in 2024) and also back-ported to the Amiga.

Nice to see all these different versions of Elite :yay:

Not sure if many people are aware, but there is also a modern clone for macOS, Windows and Linux: https://www.oolite.space
