The motherboard cable is the one I am referring to. So if you have, say, a 15 cm cable connected to the internal IDE port, even if nothing is attached to it, your 1230 won't work.
Is the one on the card also limited in that way? I do like my cf cards being accessible without opening the amiga.
The TFIDE is also not buffered, so most likely it also won't work if it's too long. Remember that the 1230 was designed to be the most affordable 1230 card on the market, and as such, it has limitations that do not apply to other cards, such as the TF1260.
You will have to add a buffer to the internal IDE to use long cables... there is no way around that, I'm afraid.

Time to hunt down an IDE buffer. I'll PM Go0se if he has one. Also saw them on AmigaStore.
BTW I'm curious is there a reason why the TF1230 doesn't work with a CF cable attached, even if that cable isn't attached to anything on the other end? Does it function like an antenna or something?

I've no idea. I've never seen this issue myself personally. Also the card was designed and routed in about a week, its as cheap as it is possible to make a 1200 030 card.

@relo999 a short cable from the TF1230 to a back door bracket with CF card adaptor (the hole by the Mouse port) does work.
I just managed to get the cable to reach.
You could also use a longer cable and then just buy some 44 pin IDC connectors. Cut the cable shorter then use a vice to squeeze the new IDC connector on the cable.

Standard buffered TF1230 setup, boots to Workbench, don't know what you are all complaining about!? :o
