You know, having XBoot III delete your carefully crafted NEWDESK.INF file because
you didn't realize that it doesn't *read* an INF file, but takes your pick and replaces
NEWDESK.INF with it, is a whole new level of frustration.

You know, that carefully crafted NEWDESK.INF file with all the icons and icon names,
window colors and shades, file associations, and placements, etc, etc, that you had
lovingly worked so long on.

The one that, of course you had a backup of - from 3 months ago... :mad:

Ouch....

Yeah, it's one thing I wished it had. It's slightly annoying having to copy my amended INF files back to my 'master inf' folder.

On the other hand, XBoot III is a literal Godsend for multi-TOS version,
multi-resolution machines like my STacy.

I mean, it does TOS v1.04, TOS v3.06, low res, med res, and hi res.

That's a bit of a nightmare when changing between them. I did finally
figure out a way with XBoot III that allows me to boot up to a saved
desktop for each combination.

(well, not low res - it's not supported by XBoot III as far as I can tell)

I have 3 different desktops for my MSTE (HiRes, MedRes and LoRes) with different configs, so I think 6 different configs one minimal one for each so no accs for running games. I'm a little shocked you deleted your inf file, I've never had issues.

The issue seems to be when using different TOS versions.

DESKTOP.INF vs NEWDESK.INF, for whatever reason.

When I was just playing around with saved .INF files under
TOS v3.06 (med and hi res), I didn't have any issues at all.

<shrugs> Don't know, but got it sorted out now so it's all
good.

I'm just really glad we've got something like XBoot III. :)

Ahh OK. I just use 2.06 in my MSTE, so maybe that's why I haven't seen that issue.

Glad it's sorted, XBoot III is definitely a great tool.

In case it might help anyone else who might find themselves in the same
(multiple TOS versions) situation, here is what I wound up doing (and I
wouldn't be surprised if there's not multiple solutions).

I started with creating an .INF file for every situation and of course ended
up with quite a few. I had 3 versions for each TOS version, so I had 6 .INF
files in all.

What I found though, was that was unnecessary. For 1 thing, XBoot III does
not support low-res. I did keep a LOW_RES.INF file so that under TOS v3.06
I can just use the drop down menu option "Read INF File" to quickly sort out
the desktop, for the rare times I might need that.

Otherwise, I have HI_306.INF and MED_306.INF for TOS v3.06. Now when
using TOS v1.04, I had been doing the same thing, for example, something
like HI_104.INF. That's when I ran into problems, for whatever reason.

I'm a big fan of the "KISS" principle "Keep It Simple Silly" (or stupid in some
variations). It seems I didn't have to do any of that with TOS v1.04 and
XBoot III. I booted into high res under TOS v1.04. Arrange my desktop and
save it as DESKTOP.INF. Now for the hi res saved set in XBoot III, pick the
DESKTOP.INF file. However, for the med res saved set, I pick *nothing*.

When I boot up into med res TOS still uses that DESKTOP.INF file and it
nicely arranges the med res desktop. That's it. Clean and simple.

At least that seems to be working for me...at the moment...until further
notice... :lol:
