I've got my old A1200 off the shelf and am going to update it to the latest firmware and wanted some guidance on what the best kickstart/ OS version is for the Amiga these days?

I'm in no way an Amiga expert any more, maybe when I was still young, so would need to also recompile ROMs for the TF IDE etc, so I can boot directly from the TF1260.

Any suggestions?

I have a TF4060 and for me it is a patched Kickstart3.1 (with EIDE driver included?) and AmigaOS 3.1 + various patches.

Everyone seems to like Kickstart 3.2.3 and AmigaOS 3.2.3 (which is newer than AmigaOS 3.5 or AmigaOS 3.9) but I've not tried it.

Whatever route you go you need to install MMULib and enabled MUFastROM and MUFastZero to unlock the potential of the TF1260 and it's EIDE

And if you want to try AmigaOS 3.2.X, MMULib is already included in the package and you chose whether to install it or not.

Thank you gentlemen, I have 3.1.4 but not with the ehide driver in the rom at the mo.

All having the driver in ROM does is mean you don't have to have anything connected to the motherboard IDE.

In my memory I had to change another part of the ROM to have nothing on the IDE connector and no delay on cold boot. (Kickstart 3.1)

That's what I washing to do, so I had one IDE device using the TF IDE, not two.

If you use Kickstart 3.1 (I am not recommending it, just what I used), the patch to remove/reduce the long delay on cold boot with nothing on the IDE interface is on Doobrey's website (or was)

FYI A1200 doesn't need additional hardware to have a 1MB Kickstart ROM (normally 512KB) you just need to use 2x 27C800 ROMs instead of 2x27C400

How I have it at the moment is with the A1200IDE as boot drive, which does work perfectly well. So may give that a try and the ehide as extra drives once I've done the rom upgrade and see which I prefer.

BTW, I've goblets of 27c800,400&160 and the adaptors program, so I'm sorted forums already and know they millwork in an a1200.

Depending on which Kickstart ROM you choose as your base, there may not be enough space to add EIDE driver and stay 512KB. You can either switch to 1MB ROM (which can be done automagically with todays tools) or remove something from the ROM (such as workbench.library)

Just a quick note that the 4060 has the ehide.device in its own ROM, so you don't need to patch the kickstart to add it (it is also not compatible with the 1260 ehide.device).
