Planned downtime and server move [COMPLETED]

The server host is moving its infrastructure to another premises soon, which means I'm going to have to migrate the server to another host basically :roll:
This will be annoying because server IP address will change, and then that will screw up all the DNS and probably a load of other things as well. It could take a long time to get everything moved and running again.
I can't say when the move will happen, but you can expect random downtimes and various DNS related issues at some point over the next couple of weeks.
It could all take a while to get everything up and running properly again ..As if I haven't enough to do already.... :roll:

So this happened a lot sooner than expected and completely went wrong :roll: :pullhair:
The disk imaging and uploading to the new server failed repeatedly and confused Ramnode themselves. Long story short, a few weeks ago they had to resize my disk and they made it too large, which meant they were failing to upload the image onto the new package because it simply did not fit! It was actually me who pointed that out to them about a hour ago! :lol:
I got the new IP address then 123-reg was down, so I couldn't change DNS settings for ages! So I imagine DNS will be flaky for the next few hours...
Then to top it all off a fly decided to kill itself in my cup of tea!! :pullhair: :headbang:

I don't know if anything is broken anywhere so people just have to let me know something is off...
DNS could take 24 hours to update properly everywhere..

No doubt about it, I wasn't starting to develop twitches, I had twitches!!

Let's put it into perspective. It went well. There was no major loss of data, downtime for server changes may take longer than expected as it NEVER go as planned and for type of end users like us, it is reasonable downtime.

True.. zero data loss is a great result.
At least it wasn't my fault it went wrong this time :)
The server had a full disk image before anything.. I have off-site hourly backups and ive got more backup methods coming soon.
The new host is a bit odd. The server IP isn't the public IP anymore.. So the server can be upgraded , which would normally change the IP address, but while the server IP may change.. the public one won't... So one day that may come in useful..

I've worked out i'm no longer getting external emails because I believe the new host is blocking port 25 :roll: I thought it was odd emails stopped dead. I can still send emails but as I am dealing with multiple suppliers each day, this now poses a bit of a problem :( Short of moving to a totally different hosting company, or mess with email relays.. neither option is great, and very time consuming. I hope ramnode can address this problem... Originally their policy was they didn't block any ports.. but now it seems otherwise :roll:

Of course you'll have to change your MX record and the other e-mail verification entries as well.
It's not easy these days changing your IP address.
