In light of this probably won't be simple under load of drama, instead of polluting the original thread viewtopic.php?p=113637#p113637 , I thought I would start my own blog.

So @Steve sent me this page to first start to get it connected to wifi.

I think he lies the first problem in itself because I don't even know how to connect power to the Pi nevermind setup wifi. I need to know the MAC address as I use MAC & IP binding on my router. So if I don't know the MAC address, I can't give it a IP address.

So I am starting with "[Updated Mar 2021] The Only Method You Need to Set Up Raspberry Pi WiFi!" And now downloading the Windows software...

(imager_1.8.5.exe) is what it downloaded for me.

To install on Raspberry Pi OS, type
sudo apt install rpi-imager
in a Terminal window.

Yeah right, no where near that stage yet.

Software installed so I assume choose the first box...


In my case a PI 4.


Choose OS, no idea ?!


Choose storage, no idea, is this going to trash the dive or just store temp files or what ? how much space does it need ??

Chris you're getting frustrated because you're doing all this without actually reading anything. If you read PiStorm GitHub pages and other setup instructions you'll know the pi automatically resizes it's as card after first boot to fill the entire SD. The guides also tell you what version to download, prob smallest base raspberry is 32bit I think, but plz check. Sorry I'm not at my pc right now tho.

Don't rush, read, take a breather. Take notes :)

Frustrating yes, anything software related always turns into a total nightmare :(

Was trying to follow the first page link you sent but it seems I have to jump to the git instructions after installing the software. So it's already got confusing which page I should actually be following right now.

It doesn't explain anything about storage though. I assume it actually means it is expecting a SD card for this stuff ?

OK so now I had a SD card in my PC USB and its come up, so I assume thats it then.

Next problem there is nothing to say what to do about the screen either..

I think that you're expecting things to be more complicated than they are and am then getting confused as to why it's not asking you awkward questions and looking for complexity and tying yourself up in knots. They've taken a lot of effort to make it almost foolproof and simple.

In that last screen it's asking if you want to pre-configure the image, if you don't then just click upon the "No" button and move on.

How do I know if I want to configure it or not ? How do I know to click no ? The step is missing. So maybe some setup step is missing.. again I don't know. It could be something important.. again I don't know. Clicking some random option with the assumption of not knowing what the option is for or if it's important, is normally a receipe to where things start to go wrong. I see it all the time in Linux guides, they miss one tiny and yet important step and it all goes to hell after that. I'd rather know what I am doing is right and save myself weeks of torment.

I know what you're thinking. Been there, done that for years but the Raspberry Pi OS configurator really does make it very simple.

If in doubt, just pick the correct machine type and a basic Raspberry Pi Linux and click on the Next buttons. Any extra configuration will be done with the wizard which runs the first time you boot. They've made it as simple as it can be for people who don't know their arse from their elbow.
