I have a hard time removing 44 pins PLCC chips, like those used for Exxos boards, especially from the Eprom Burner socket.
I have one of those generic PLCC extractors and it works fine with larger chips. No problem with chips like GLUE or MMU. But when trying to use it with the smaller chips, it feels like it is going to break the chip and/or the socket. At least it is like that with the Eprom Burner socket. Don't know if it's a tighter socket or what.
Is it worth to invest in one of those more expensive extractors that are specific for 44-pin chips? Like this:

Or otherwise what is the recommended method.

Good question. I've never been able to get those cheap extractors to remove any cheap. The metal is to soft and the hooks are not large enough. I tend to use them to lever the chip out side by side which isn't great and risks damaging the socket.
I've never found anything better. So I wonder where you found the one in your image ? It can't be any worse than the cheap extractors..

My experience with the cheap PLCC extractors is that after relatively little use, the corners of the extractors round off due to being made of material that's too soft, and then they just stop working, and whilst you can file them to get the correct hook shape back, it's never the same. After that, it's time for the bin.
A decent puller like you've described would be quite useful.
