Thought I would start over with it all on my main PC. My laptop is just to slow to get anything done. I doubt half my programs will work but let's just see how long it takes and the chaos it will entail to go through all this. Of course I likely won't have time for much of anything else either! Plus with my RSI I am not going to be able to do much faffing about to start with!

First problem is my MSI BIOS doesn't see my USB stick!

So I am downloading mint again, and some installer thing to setup the USB listed on THIS page.

So that went well.


Now onto spending all day trying to find out how to setup the USB with the ISO image!

I downloaded this one instead "ETCHER FOR WINDOWS (LEGACY 32 BIT) (X86|X64) (PORTABLE)" which seems to load up now!

MSI BIOS still doesn't see the USB stick. Can't see anything obvious as to why that is.


So now what ?

Tried random things and now the usb is seen. Can't post images currently as I only have my tablet.

I have no idea which is my 860 EVO drive as all the drive labels are missing!

My only idea is to delete the partition and see if it flags up as "unformatted" to give me a clue actually what drive it is.

Now back to all this partition BS I had before

The drive showed a lot of free space without NTFS.. so I hope I'm trashing the correct drive and not my windows drive...:hide:


So reboot, select my boot drive (F11 only worked) and...

I clicked NO as did not know if it was going to trash my windows drive or not.

Sounds like BIOS LEGACY/UEFI boot mode mismatch between your two OSs. I see you used UEFI to boot the USB stick.

If it's Debian-like you should have a rescue mode on the USB stick and then select 'yes' to the legacy option when you do the re-install Grub option next time.

BUT I haven't done dual boot in years as virtualisation is now so good. I might be talking gibberish these days.

You really don't want to dual-boot on the same drive as Windows, literally begging for trouble.

It can be done of course, but seriously.. give Linux its own hard drive!

Then it's just 1-click-done, no problems!

edit: Yes what BW said, you can't mix & match legacy/uefi. You gotta boot from a legacy USB, not a UEFI USB (The USB contains both types and your bios should pick them both up)
