Not sure how common this is, so I thought I'd share it with the rest of you. It's not just the caps in the PSU that can fail...

That's a tantalum capacitor. Quite normal failure mode.

Those are just normal 30 pin SIPPs so you can just replace that one stick, probably fitting a SIMM socket for future replacability.

P.S. Everyone's right, they're ceramics. I was being put off by their colour.

They look like ceramics to me ? I've had a few of those fail.

Looks like normal decoupling caps for each chip to me, so ceramic multilayer non polarized caps.

But if they fail there is a short between VCC and GND so BOOM!

There was a nice black bloom on the inside of the case from the resulting mushroom cloud. Came off quite nicely though with a toothbrush and detergent.
