Tidying up a 3d printed case

I've just bought a SDrive Max for my 800xl. The case is an XL style case that's been 3d printed. It's fine from a distance but a bit rough and could really do with smoothing some rough edges and maybe even filling and painting to remove some imperfections.
Before I start doing that, I just wanted to see if there were other ways of improving the appearance of printed parts without resorting to sanding, filling and painting? Or are the old ways still the best?!
