Convert jpeg images for viewing in high res monochrome mode.

I have been able to take screenshots using Snapit and then convert to greyscale in XnView and save as jpg files which can be viewed on the PC. Now I'm wondering if it's possible to convert to IMG and use as a desktop pic in Thing etc. So far I've had no success. Have tried converting to Binary (No Dither) and resizing the image to 640 x 400 and saving as IMG but no joy. It won't load as desktop image in Thing and if I try to open in SNIP it says Image Header Problem. Has anyone already mastered this? I just thought it would be cool.
eg, this:

No idea about this, but I use XnConvert for images, no clue what the difference is from XnView.

Seems expensive and have seen reports about it not working on windows 10.

Well, version 9 is really old now and I only use win7. Version 7 is floating about a lot cheap, that's easier to use than V9.
