Years ago, I used to run a quadbiking servicing department and leisure facility for an ex British tank commander who owned the business. When he and his army pals used to get going, it was all sorts of interesting. :shock: :lol:

I was caught out once by a colour TV flyback, many many years ago, while doing 'experiments'. It does burn a nice pinpoint blast zone on your skin - but if it happens to find a path through your body it is a very special, unforgettable type of pain that makes a good lesson :) It doesn't feel like a normal shock but rather your nerves are going on fire inside your arm and leg. Not recommended.

I used to build pulsed lasers as a kind of side project hobby thing so I have some caps, coils and tubes here that look quite entertaining. Not photonicinduction levels of madness but still not your usual household electronics! I might post a few pics when I have time.

I knew a guy who managed to drop live high voltage transformer wires over his legs. like 10KV 50mA 50hz. He got burnt badly. He got lucky as the convulsions he was having threw him clear away from the wires.

This is a random assortment of high power items I could dig up in 5 minutes. A lot of the 'fun' stuff is buried away in boxes in the garage :-/

Golf ball for scale. For some reason it was easier to find a golf ball than a coin. I don't actually play golf.


I was also building a fancy PI discriminating metal detector at one point, which is in a box here (a big spaghetti of breadboards). And I was getting into making an analog synth but got distracted with other things so barely any progress on that one.

I can't attest to a flyback incident (I'm thankful for that!!) I have had a couple of mains incidents that were no fun at all...

First was when I was a youngster, maybe 5 or a bit older, and my parents didn't notice, but I had a long metal key, the sort used to open tinned meats etc, and whilst sitting on the kitchen counter, I wiggled it in behind a plug, too young to comprehend the dangers. A short airborne trip across to the other side of the kitchen later, and it was that point at which I discovered a healthy respect for the mains!

Accidents do happen though, and about a couple of years back I reached around the side of my Mac Classic, forgetting the plastic safety cover was missing and discharged the mains filter capacitor across my hand...

No flight this time, just a very loud 'crack' and all the power went off. No burns, but one very surprised person. Luckily no harm done to either me or the Mac, but another lesson in being careful.

Yikes. I did a few sketchy things with mains when I was young but thankfully didn't manage this one :)
