@Icky put a box round the whole bell thing and forget about it. The safest part is actually likely to be the connector blocks as they are the newest bit there by a lot of years.

I have decided to embrace it and restore it by cleaning off all the rubbish paint as it is a 40's GEC transformer in Bakelite.

The current bell is actually a modern replacement but in all my research on the transformer its looking like the square to the bottom right is the original buzzer. Similar to this one (slightly different model)

These photos are clean examples of the painted ones I have.

May be all the paint is holding it together and removing it may end in disaster.

Just remember bakelite may contain asbestos.

Indeed I did. No worries about the wait I have so many other projects on the go at the moment.
I expect the house is keeping you very busy!

Absolutely, the latest project is fibre networking down to the shed in the garden as the best route is to follow the armoured mains cable but running ethernet alongside for a long run is no good. Might write this up in my blog page.

Fibre is definitely preferable to copper. Is the armoured mains cable in ducting of any sort, or is it buried?
