What am I looking at you ask? I set up a small Telnet server on the A5000 and successfully connected to it from my Mac. Yep TCP is working, you can see the 3 way handshake at the top of the image, and you can see I am connected to the Telnet server via TCP and logged in, from where I can run commands.

Something just occurred to me.

When I connect via my Mac and Telnet, I am connecting from a high port to port 23 on the A5000. Normal TCP/IP behaviour.

When I connect from the A5000 to a Windows share, it's connecting to 139, which is correct. However the source port is unusually low, 1025. I suspect that when the SYN/ACK is coming back, the A5000 sees the low port and doesn't like it. The only thing that makes me question this, is that there isn't an immediate reset, but the source port just looks wrong to me.

This make a lot of sense, but what is weird is that it would use such a low port to begin with.

Just chatted with a friend who is rather more experienced than me in TCP/IP and he said that port 1025 is ok for a smaller stack, but I should look at TCP options, so I guess I will :)

The RISCOS CLI does have some familiar commands, but then on the other hand it has some 'weirdness'...

For example, *dir will take you to the root of a drive, but *dir SCSI::SCSI_5.$.Archive will take you to the specified directory in the SCSI filesystem. Yes, you can specify the filing system too.

So don't type *dir when you've just navigated to a directory, because you'll be back where you started.

Instead of *dir for a directory listing, you use *cat (No surprises there really) or *ex for an expanded listing.

As a DOS and Linux user, this has slightly 'done my head in'.

So, my network TAP has arrived, hopefully I'll get that sorted over the weekend and we can see if the packets actually get to the A5000 when trying to connect to a CIFs share.

Since telnet to the A5000 works from my Mac, that is suggestive that TCP actually works as advertised, so I suspect it is the response from the hosting server/laptop that the A5000 doesn't like.
