rubber_jonnie wrote: 06 Feb 2026 11:06 Must admit I replaced my whole gun last year, the damn thing wouldn't heat up, only £25 and it came with a new hose. Saying that I do see some evidence of flux getting to the larger filter where it connects to the base station.
I don't see the base station filter with flux build up. It only seems to have got half way down the hose. So I just cut it in half as I needed to use it.

I was half thinking that I wonder if a fuel filter or something could be hacked on the base station somehow to at least give it some protection.
You could try but I'm not sure the flow would be sufficient as it's designed for liquid not air. My problem was using flux for desoldering, now I just add fresh solder without flux and it's been fine.

What would be the difference ? Its got a thicker wall and slightly larger ID.. Why would air or liquid change anything ?

I wasn't talking about the hose I was talking about the fuel filter you suggested.

ah ok. Yeah, I haven't given it any thought. There are "water traps" but might be tricky to setup. Those filter gunk, but won't limit flowrate at all.

You could put a liquid separator like they do on compressed air regulator, that should separate out the flux as long as its in liquid form and not gases still by the time it reaches the separator.

Seems like a bit too much over engineering for a desolder gun

Its preventative maintenance :)

Just been doing some fine tuning to the kitchen door with a hammer as couldn't open the door half the time. Works fine now.
