If I try to figure it out from the datasheet and following the ground, it will convince me to put it in upside down even if the markings show that it should go the way it is in the photo. And then I'll be stuck in that rabbithole, confused. So...

I hereby decree it's the right way around and that's the way I'm going to install it.

My oscillator had a very clear dot which marked pin 1, and when installed the text on it was the right way up (like in your photo).

Great, thanks. This oscillator doesn't seem to have a dot but it has a gold corner 'feature' that probably indicates pin 1.

So by this evening I managed:-

- all of the small, fiddly SMT ICs - except one I am sure I ordered but can't find (DS1307)
- most of the small-quantity SMT passives (caps + resistors up to quantities of about 8x each, crystal + thermistor etc.)
- the diodes

Next will be boring-scale quantities of caps and resistors, some of which will ping off the table of course. I already lost 2 (but found them, somehow).

Calling it good enough for tonight. Will get more done at the weekend.

I'm nearly done with all the tiny stuff!!!! I just have ......what.... 52 rice-grain capacitors left... o_O

Hopefully these ones are flat like the resistors - the rectangular/cubic ones just ping out from under the tweezers constantly when you try to hold them down. 52x that... not a formula for a happy Saturday morning.

...nope, these are the same kind of not-very-flat, slippery things with slightly rounded, tinned ends that like to jump out & rotate from under the tweezers.

I'm done with those caps. 'done'

Not sure what the effort/frustration threshold is for claiming my serial # but I did get all the fiddly surface mount stuff finished on both sides, except for an IC I lost track of :)

I'll spend some time now checking for joints, shorts / bridges on all the IC pins before trying to construct a 060 socket from donor sockets...

No solder bridges, just one sneaky unsoldered leg on U303. Not too shabby 8-)

Looking at the 060 socket next.

Constructed a socket for the '060, using an '040 socket, stealing pins from a '000 socket to fill the extra rows.

Also had to extract a few for the strange keying pattern.

This is fairly easily done with a warm soldering iron @ about 250'c, applying heat & pressure the pins from the back until they drop out.

I think I'll be satisfied with this progress for today. Think I had enough for one sitting :)

Does U201 (the LM7905 regulator) need to have a heatsink and/or insulator under it?
