The main issue I have now is that even running the 7805 at 9v or even 7.5v, it's taking about .5A on the input and the 7805 is getting quite warm, so I need to find a bigger heatsink for it, unless I decide to run it direct from 5v, though the 7805 does provide a layer of protection from the wrong voltages being applied by accident.

Definitely something I'm thinking about, though I also like the idea that it uses the 'original' components. For now I've given it a bigger heatsink and am feeding it 7.5v.

OK, so I am trying the 7805 with a larger heatsink at 7.5v input and it is OK:

However I have ordered a Traco 7805 replacement and I'll decide later what to do.
