Good news, everyone. I fitted a replacement 5719 Gary chip (£10!) and the HC533 and rom emulator now appear to get along!
The A500 has booted in to Kickstart 3.2 from the flash at 50Mhz CPU and is running ATK RAM tests now, and it's passed several rounds already so it's looking good.
