The Spares board runs, just won't load any 48K games, just 16K, and then erratically, so I think it is likely fixable, just needs the right diagnostics to work out what's bad. It has a new belt, but it was a cheap one so it may break. Still, your friend doesn't need it as I've installed a mod to allow an external tape drive input (with motor control). There's an attempt at making a output to allow saving but the level wasn't right.
