OK, so the XT-IDE is working to a point now
@HigashiJun :)

It is a least working to a point, I haven't tested booting from this machine yet from a CF, but the ROM is working and shows up at boot time.
I wasn't able to write the ROM whilst installed on the board, but I was with my TL866 after auto configuring and saving the ROM file in XTIDECFG and copying across using a floppy disk. The process for that is interesting, but it works :)

Yeah, I know...
My Book 8088 doesn't really count as although it has an ISA expansion bus adapter, it already has XT-ide built in
But on the other hand I'd rather have something more interesting like the 1000EX.
We'll see.

Yeah, it's a nice machine.
I was first thinking of getting a Sinclair PC200 / AMSTRAD PC20, but prices are crazy, or even an OLIVETTI Prodest PC1, which remains more affordable, but I dislike the idea of having the ISA expansion cart outside the machine.

Yeah, external ISA ports are a non starter for me too. I'll have to have a look round ebay, but I really want something that's not standard PC, a bit more interesting.

Bidding on an Amstrad PPC512 at the moment, very cheap £32 at the moment, has a fault in that it locks up after 10minutes, but it does boot. Might be interesting :)

I decided to upgrade the spare BooBip ROM emulator I have spare from mini B USB to USB C as my hacked on USB Mini B connector looked a bit rubbish and I'm running out of good cables.
So I got these from Ali Express:

And fitted one to the BooBip:

Works great, even when reversing the cable, and is much lower profile, so I'm going to pull the other BooBip out of my Amiga and do that too (I took the mini B off) so I can do in place changes to installed ROMs if needs be.
Happy with the result.

@rubber_jonnie, they were an interesting idea for a mobile PC back in the day. I remember the screen being a bit difficult to read because of a lack of back light?
