Yeah, I think it's a spring.
I hit a pothole a few weeks ago, so that could have initiated the failure.

Definitely sounds feasible.

Car still not fixed, but will be tomorrow. Cost of the spring, shock absorber and bushes.. £850!
Still, not quite enough to buy a Falcon. :-)

Ouch!! That's 'I'm glad I was sitting down when I found that out' kind of money...

I've got the LCIII home and done the quick tests:
No shorts
Power rails OK.
Clock getting to the CPU.
/HALT not asserted.
The CPU is doing absolutely nothing though. It's sitting as if it's a dumb hunk of silicon. Nothing on any pin.
I may start a new thread for the attempted repair.

Just too tired to do any work on the LCIII today. I can work on it tomorrow as it's supposed to be wet.
I have got quite a lot done on my Dad's SAAB today though. Got the tracking redone, fitted a replacement rear fog lamp bulb, cleaned a lot of grime from the steering wheel and leather seats and then put conditioner on. Finally cleaned the dash and centre console. Oh and I fitted a jubilee clip to a pipe which goes between the turbo and a sensor which keeps on getting blown off by the pressure and causing the engine warning light to go amber.
A week Monday it goes in to get new pneumatic struts for the tailgate so that it will stay open and the reversing lights diagnosed, probably switch.
Once these things are done it will be fully usable. There are still lots to do for the full renovation, some of which will need a body shop to do, such as fix the dents in the roof caused by the people who refitted the roof lining.
Still, it's got its "whoosh" back. For 20 seconds, during the time the engine management unit allows over boost, the car will actually out accelerate my BMW, even though it's supposed to be the lowest performance engine with the "light pressure turbo". You have to hold on though as the car has a bit of torque steer.

Great car you have !
SAABs were really good cars back in time.

What model SAAB is it out of curiosity?
I have a vague remembrance of the 99 Turbo coming to the UK, it seemed to be somehow magical and all the car magazines were talking about it.

You're showing your age. The 99 Turbo came out in the early 80s. :-)
It's a 93 SE LPT (light pressure turbo) model year 01, i.e. late 2000.

Ahh yes, I remember that shape very well. In fact I'm sure my colleague has the V6 Aero convertible. Goes very well :)
