Got a good deal on both of them, £30 each, so hard to resist.

That brings back a few memories, we used to sell the Sega Game Gear, cracking little console for the time.

I've got quite a few handhelds, so it seemed logical to add one of these to the collection. Need to pull it apart and check the caps though. Need to do the same for the Intellivion too TBH.

So feeling better this morning so I cracked open the Game Gear since there was no power despite fitting all new batteries.
Turned out somebody had recapped it, but 2 of the replacements had pulled off pads (3 out of 4).

It's the two large ones front of the pic. I think they were too big and got knocked off during reassembly.
I replaced with smaller equivalents.

And had to get creative because of the missing pads.
I also had to reflow the replacement caps on the power board, however I now get a power light and display back light. I'll take that as progress.

Ouch!
Looks like a slightly toasted PCB too. The mosfet looks a bit iffy too

Another person who should be banned from using a soldering iron by the looks of it!

As it goes, it's mostly a combination of burned flux from the cap replacement and some sort of glue that the old caps were stuck down with, and most of it has come off with IP and a stiff brush.
But as @exxos said, another person who should be banned from owning a soldering iron. I'm also always surprised by how much factory flus is often on boards from this era.
Was surprised at the 34v coming out of the power board, but then had an 'Aha' moment when I realised that it is for the backlight.
In other news, the Zaxxon cart arrived for the Intellivision today, and the console works, though I had to test it on an old 14" CRT TV, and I think a RIFA may have sizzled in the TV when I turned it on, so time for a service.

Well, the copy of Zaxxon for the Intellivision arrived:

I think that 'Based on the real arcade game' is being nice to it, as it is quite different to the other versions I've played, but it is an old console, so I forgive it :)
Next up I need to give it a composite mod, as the display over RF is questionable on my LCD TV and I don't have a spot for my CRT TV...
