Or is that '44' just saying it's a 44 pin socket? If so it would help a lot to have pin 1 marked for orientation purposes on future boards to ensure correct socket orientation.

Or is the large bar supposed to indicate the pin 1 side of the socket as below?
If so, then that's my inexperience and a lesson learned, though I always orientate based on the arrow or dot on the socket itself, so for me having pin 1 marked would be very helpful. Also, I seem to recall the bars around the edge weren't that clear on mine, hence why I went by the '44' marker.

I usually also zoom in and look at the writing on the chip and the pin 1 dot to help orientate, but the dot on that ROM is so damn small it's hard to pick out on the pictures.

I oriented the 84 pin socket from the photos as it was a lot easier to ID the chip orientation with it being larger and the writing clearer. But I didn't twig (It was late and I was tired) that I hadn't followed the same argument with the 84 pin socket, because I'd been able to visually ID it from the pics. Again, lessons learned for me.

Will flip it around tomorrow, as that's when I'm likely going to be doing the patches.

False alarm, for some reason mouser threw in a couple 68 pin plcc sockets just to f*ck with my mind, Hmmm oh well the price was right.. :thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup:

You can never have too many 68 pin PLCC sockets :)

Right, so since I can't find my 40pin to 44pin IDE adapter, another is on order, so that once I've flipped my ROM and done the patching, I will have several options open to me for testing, including full size IDE, laptop IDE and CF cards via an adapter.

Looking forward to trying it out.

RJ,if you look at the inside white line that's in the actual pins one corner is folded over. If you match the cutoff corner on the socket its orintated correctly.

Ahh, OK, thanks I see now. Not run into the problem before, but that's a good thing to know. We all have to learn, at least it isn't a massive un-correctable mistake. :)

So Icky, what's the issue with not populating the 4 pins on the IDE connector. Are they wrong or just hard putting on a 40 pin IDE connector?

The 4 pins at the side aren't necessary for full size IDE connectors. I think Icky had in mind the 44 pin laptop size IDE connector originally, which also carries drive power, but that weren't required for the full size connector, but still ended up in there. Mine are connected as described for 5v power take off.

I'm sure Icky will correct me if I'm wrong.

Those 4 pins pins are just the power and are not used for the 40pin 3.5" connector..

They were added because I thought Icky was adding a 2.5" 44pin connector which does have power on it :)

We are likely moving to the 2.5" 44pin connector on the next board anyway is really we are thinking towards IDE-CF type adapters for the main use on the board.
