Well I pulled that joystick apart last night, and with the broken stick out of the way, I can confirm the ST registers movements in all directions reliably.
Looking for an alternative mouse, but still determined to figure this one out, and my prime suspect is that chip. Is there any equipment that would help me view the information that's leaving the mouse? Happy to go beyond reasonable expenditure, and to keep going until I've nailed it
