Using an internal Gotek and an external disk drive

Update your old 720k to a 1.44 drive etc.

Have a look at the schematics, IIRC there are some drive select jumpers on the mainboard.

Maybe I did something wrong before but I've got the external drive working with my ST that has a Gotek installed.

So now the test matrix is like this:

This leads me to think there is an STE-specific issue going on here.

Maybe I should simplify things and leave the Gotek out of the equation first and figure out why the external FDD doesn't work with any of my STEs.

I'm not really sure what to check. I know that pins 5 and 6 of the YM are for MS0/MS1. I also know that the W301 and W300 straps are on the PCB and that the pins of those straps are not jumped on my machine.

The problems seem pretty consistent with specific machines working/not working but your suggestion led me to think to use my multimeter to check the pins between both sides of the cable, just to be sure.

Did you mean they (W300, W301) are not strapped at all or are strapped like this:

As that is taken straight from the STE schematic and shows pins 2-3 connected.

They don't look strapped at all.

Looks like pins 2&3 are connected to me, buzz them out with a multimeter to confirm.
