I've done a bit of experimenting tonight and my STe external floppy port only works with my gotek if I set the gotek to DS0 and I unplug the power from the internal drive.
I have soldered a SPDT switch to w301 but it doesn't seem to do anything. I read on the atari forum that it should switch the internal drive between ds0 and ds1.
Unfortunately I managed to kill my Atari (Chinon) floppy drive whilst I was messing about and so I've had to replace it with a Samsung floppy drive from my Pentium 4. Hopefully I'll be able to transplant the floppy drive face panel and button onto it.

Re: Gotek not working with 1040STe
I've just noticed that on this wiki page ( https://www.atari-wiki.com/index.php?ti ... in_bending ) it says I need to do one more thing:
Cut wire 10 on the internal floppy cable, close to the motherboard side.
Really? I presume this means I'm supposed to count 10 wires in from the red one on the floppy cable and try to cut it without cutting any others but that seems both tricky and odd. Also why should it matter which end of the cable I cut? Doesn't seem right to me.
Has anyone got this mod to work on an STe? I'm not keen on attempting the other mod that involves lifting 2 pins on ym chip so I might just have to live with only having an external gotek on my STe.
PS I've never seen a forum allow up to 900 MB for attachments! Is that intentional?

Re: Gotek not working with 1040STe
First off ALL drives on the ST/F/M/E regardless of their position (Internal/External) need to be set to D0/S0 as the machine does the selection not the drive. I'd honestly suggest that if you want to have an external Gotek with switching to swap the drive letters that you use the tried and trusted YM drive switch option, which I did here: Drive A: & B: swap.danboid wrote: 21 Dec 2024 00:30 I've done a bit of experimenting tonight and my STe external floppy port only works with my gotek if I set the gotek to DS0 and I unplug the power from the internal drive.

I have a Gotek that I took out of my external enclosure to do some testing with something else and it has S0 set and nothing else. I used the same drive to do testing with the machine on that thread I linked to and it worked just fine.
Both drives should be set to D0/S0.
If you read the 2nd post down on that thread, @exxos makes a specific mention about W300/W301 so you may be chasing down a blind alley with that.

Obviously exxos knows what he's on about and so do you but at least a couple of users on the AF claim to have got the w301 switch mod to work:rubber_jonnie wrote: 21 Dec 2024 10:31 If you read the 2nd post down on that thread, @exxos makes a specific mention about W300/W301 so you may be chasing down a blind alley with that.

Could it be that mod only works on specific revisions of the STe? I find it hard to believe multiple users would pretend that this mod works.

Re: Gotek not working with 1040STe
I've jut re-read that topic and I think I've spotted what my problem could be/was:
I had the Chinon drive but I killed it trying to get this to work.3 of these STF (big button) floppy drives (Chinon 347 rev A) are hardwired to be DS0. Irritatingly, there are solder pads for DS0 - DS4, but by the looks of it, DS0 track leads to a wire on the other side of the board that jumps to a IO chip pin. I am going to add some pins, but I suspect it will still send DS0. Could try and cut the wire and jump the DS1 to it, but its a long shot and I have found a few people complaining about this particular model being hard wired.

Re: Gotek not working with 1040STe
What type of switch is the item 0010 in the exxos store? It is called a toggle switch but is it a DPDT or a SPDT?

Re: Gotek not working with 1040STe
It is a toggle switch, that is the physical type. I'd suggest it's a SPDT as it has 3 connections and flips the middle connection between the two outer connections.danboid wrote: 21 Dec 2024 12:34 What type of switch is the item 0010 in the exxos store? DPDT is essentially 2 SPDT switches in the same package. SPST is simply a 2 contact on off switch.
I'm not saying you don't already know this, It's just useful info for anybody browsing the thread :)

Re: Gotek not working with 1040STe
OK, so I am a bit confused here, are you talking about an external drive with a big button Chinon? I don't believe that any STE's would have an internal big button drive as they tended to be early machines only, but external drives can have big button drives.danboid wrote: 21 Dec 2024 10:43 I've jut re-read that topic and I think I've spotted what my problem could be/was:

You'll find that the drives used in ST's are hardwired for DS0, both internal and external as that is the way ST's work.
