Well I screwed up this install by putting a socket for the CPU on the booster board. After that it wouldn't fit under the RF shielding. Even without the shielding the keyboard wouldn't lie flat with it installed. So I took it off the motherboard again and tried to take the whole PCB sandwich of the relocator board, booster board, and 68k socket apart again, which was extremely difficult and annoying to do cleanly with the staggered/overlapping pins and whatnot blocking my desolder gun. In the process of taking it apart I ended up damaging the accelerator board. I tried to fix it, there were two missing pads that I put bodge wires on, but no dice. I put it all back in the ST again, and now it would fit under the shielding but it just froze on boot when it tried to access the floppy drive. :(

I put the old CPU back and it's still working fine so at least I didn't damage anything in the ST itself.

What is extra annoying is that when it was on the motherboard with everything connected up originally, it was working just fine too! So lesson learned, don't put any sockets on for this mod on the 070789/070859 style boards.

I'll have to order a new accelerator and relocator board (and perhaps CPU) at some point soon as I don't trust the one I have now after I damaged it. And since I have to solder the CPU I may also order the dualtos mod anyway, as it'll be quite difficult to install that after the fact without being able to take the CPU off. Unless I leave a wire hanging off the CE via. :lol:

Is there a trick to desoldering PCB sandwiches like this btw? With pins in opposite directions right next to each other. No way to fit a desoldering gun over the pins because it's blocked by the adjacent pins.

I think it be far easier to just use the MMU decoder board rather than fixing stuff then damaging it then trying to fix it again.

What do you mean? The booster board? Or is the MMU decoder board something else?

I understand you may want to fix your current board. Though I don't have much time at the moment to help diagnose such problems.

Ah I see. No no I've given up on fixing the booster board now and will get a new one instead. Taking it apart again will likely just make it even more broken. If I had just not put the damn CPU socket on top I'd have a working 16 MHz STFM right now. That was my main plan and I didn't even intend to bother with the dual TOS setup. But now I think I will in fact be installing a dual TOS setup as well. Was mostly just venting my frustration a bit. :D

And that is a very interesting decoder board! I had not seen it. Unfortunately I have a board with SMT MMU and GLUE so I will have to go for the C070789 style STFM Dual TOS kit anyway. Edit: I'm tired, I mean I have to go with the booster board as decoder. Of course I have to use the dual TOS kit either way. :roll:

While I'm on the subject of this, I assume it's the "STFM KIT DUAL TOS SMT PCB" (item #0245) that I should get to pair with the booster?

If you have a 70789 style board yes.
